What Dior Homme Intense actually smells like
Dior Homme Intense is a masterclass in iris. Most fragrances use iris as a whisper; this one puts it at the centre and makes it lush — powdery, faintly cosmetic, with a pear-and-ambrette sweetness that turns the whole thing creamy. Underneath is a soft suede leather and cedar base that keeps it firmly masculine despite how pretty the top half is.
It is smooth, formal and quietly expensive-smelling, and it lasts nine to ten hours. This is the fragrance to wear to a wedding, a funeral, a good restaurant or any occasion where you want to be the best-dressed person without saying anything about it.
Iris is a divisive material — people who dislike it describe this as smelling like lipstick — so it belongs on the short list of fragrances nobody should buy blind. Two millilitres will tell you immediately which camp you are in.

Dior Homme Intense FAQ
It leans elegant rather than masculine in the conventional sense, and the powdery iris does read cosmetic to some people. The leather and cedar base anchors it. In practice it is worn overwhelmingly by men and receives a lot of compliments from women.
The original 2011 formula is richer in the iris and slightly cocoa-tinged; the current version is a touch cleaner and more woody. Both are good. We label which formulation we are pouring from.
Autumn and winter evenings, and any formal daytime event. In high summer the powder can feel heavy.
